Started in 2001, the Dot NAME universal domain extension is the sole TLD intended for personal sites only. These domains can be personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are popular by. At first, only third-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to buy john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already bought third-level domains remained online.
